Course Content
This course covers the historical development, fundamental concepts, and theoretical foundations of respectful maternal care. Approaches to maternal and newborn care are examined in light of women's rights, human rights, reproductive rights, and ethical principles. The woman-centered care model in pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, and newborn care, along with principles of privacy, informed consent, effective communication, collaborative decision-making, and cultural sensitivity, are evaluated. National and international guidelines and quality standards related to respectful maternal care are reviewed. Concepts, causes, consequences, and prevention strategies of obstetric violence, abuse, neglect, and discrimination are discussed. Respectful care approaches in vulnerable groups (adolescents, migrants, individuals with disabilities, women from low socioeconomic backgrounds, etc.) are addressed. Birth experiences, birth satisfaction, birth trauma, and trauma-sensitive care practices are evaluated. Case analyses and evidence-based practices regarding the application of respectful maternal care within the context of professionalism, advocacy, team communication, patient safety, and quality improvement processes in midwifery are emphasized.
Objectives of the Course
The aim of this course is to enable students to adopt the philosophy, ethical principles, and evidence-based practices of Respectful Maternity Care throughout pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, and newborn care.
