Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week Topics
1 Introduction to the course: Students are generally informed about the course and the questions students are curious about the course are answered. Information is gathered about the students' current knowledge about research methods.
2 Determining the research topic and question: Explanation and examination of general steps of research methods. The steps to be followed when determining the research question. Defining variables. Ethical concerns that need to be addressed when conducting a scientific research.
3 Literature review: Explaining and applying the steps to be followed while performing a literature review. Commonly used databases and examining how to use these databases. Citation formats and differences between them. Citing in-text and reference list.
4 Writing the introduction and literature review sections: Steps to be followed when writing the introduction and literature review sections of a research. General description of the subject of the study, reporting the sources and findings in the literature review, the missing points in the literature on the subject and how the study will contribute to these deficiencies, reporting the research questions.
5 Data collection tools. Quantitative, qualitative and mixed approaches: General information about qualitative and quantitative approaches to data collection and a brief summary of data collection tools that can be used within the scope of these approaches. How to use a mixed method using quantitative and qualitative approaches together.
6 Sampling, validity and reliability: Random and non-random sampling methods and investigation of differences between them. Defining validity and reliability. Issues to be taken into account in order to increase validity and reliability.
7 Writing the methodology section: Emphasis on the details of the topics such as participants, environment, data collection tools, data collection procedure and data analysis, and how they should be written.
8 Quantitative data collection tools: Introduction of quantitative data collection tools such as questionnaires, scales, and tests and the examination of their samples. Investigation of how these data collection tools can be improved, which data collection tools would be more effective and efficient to use within the scope of the study according to the research objectives, subjects and sampling.
9 Quantitative data analysis: Explaining in practice how to make quantitative data analysis through SPSS, Excel or other data analysis programs. Important points about descriptive statistics. Important points about inferential statistics. Reporting quantitative data.
10 Qualitative data collection tools: Investigation of qualitative data collection tools such as interviews, observations, and open-ended written questions. The use of these data collection tools in qualitative or mixed research. Interview, observation and preparation and application of open-ended written questions with examples.
11 Interpretation of qualitative data: Interpreting the qualitative data that were collected. Coding and coding examples. Explanation of text analysis and thematic analysis methods and their application in the course. Important points in reporting qualitative data and examining sample qualitative data reports.
12 Writing the discussion section: Evaluation of the study and its results in the light of the findings in the literature. Answering research questions, comparing the findings in the literature and study findings, analyzing and reporting the inferences of the study in terms of academic and application and the limitations of the study.
13 Conclusion of the study: Writing the introduction and conclusion sections and the points to be considered while writing these sections. Summing up the work effectively.
14 Research presentation: Considering the limited presentation times at conferences, a scientific research needs attention and focus in order to present it effectively in a limited time. Student present their research and receive feedback for their presentations.
