Course Content

The historical and cultural adventure of the English language. The evolution of Anglo-Saxon pagan culture into a Christian culture in Britain. The influence of Viking settlers and French nobles on English culture. Latin influence during the Renaissance and Reformation and the development of Protestant culture in England. The colonial period and the British Empire. The American Revolution and the development of American culture. British and American culture in the Enlightenment and Industrial Revolution. Modernism and post-modernism effects on British and American culture. Contemporary British and American societies with their multicultural structure.

Objectives of the Course

The aim of the course is to understand how the English and American cultures have developed throughout their historical journey in terms of sub-categories of culture such as literature, art, social life, and most importantly language, to gain the ability to better recognize and understand the target language and cultures

1	Introduction Students are generally informed about the course obligations, course, testing and assessment methods, resources and applications. The questions of the students regarding the course are answered.
2	Anglo-Saxon Period and Old English Migration of Anglo-Saxons from northern Europe to Britain and Anglo-Saxon pagan culture in Britain. Features of Old English and its use in literature. Daily life and religious beliefs of Anglo-Saxons.
3	Cultural Exchanges Between the British and the Vikings The settlements of the Vikings on the British island and the struggles of the British with the Vikings in this process. Cultural interactions between the British and Vikings and the effects of these interactions on English. Similarities and differences in social life, religious belief, literature and art between English and Viking cultures.
4	Norman Culture in England Normandy conquest of England and cultural changes during this period. French to English words and phrases. Differences between Norman nobility with French culture and ordinary people with Anglo-Saxon culture. Important literary works of the period and architectural and artistic changes during the period.
5	Renaissance and Reformation Latin influence on English during the Renaissance. Beginning to use English more in literature and science than Latin and French. Scientific and artistic developments in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Protestant revolution and the founding of the Church of England. First Bible published in English and religious developments in England.
6	Expository Essay Writing Practical information about the general characteristics of informative compositions.

8	Great Britain and the Rise of English The unification and colonization movements of the kingdoms of England and Scotland, and the emergence of the empire and culture of Great Britain. The rise of English as an international language. Cultural activities in British colonies, especially in North America.
9	American Revolution The emergence of divisions between American society and the British administration and the events that led to the beginning of the American revolution. The American revolution and its cultural implications. Social and cultural differences emerging between British and American societies. American English.
10	British and American Society in the Enlightenment Movements of thought in British and American societies during the Enlightenment. The effects of the Enlightenment on British and American culture. Social life and literary and artistic activities during this period. The social and economic impacts of the Industrial revolution. Realism. The standardization of English.
11	British and American Culture at the Beginning of the 19th Century The replacement of the realism movement that started with the industrial revolution by modernism. The beginning of the questioning of the traditional thought in British and American societies. Modernist literary and artistic activities. Social life and works in English in this period.
12	British and American Culture in the Late 19th Century The effects of two world wars and rapid technological developments on British and American culture. The replacement of modernism by post-modernism. The effects of popular culture on society. American culture becoming dominant target culture in the world through various platforms. American English becoming more common as a target norm.
13	21st Century British and American Culture Multiculturalism in the United Kingdom and the United States. Today's British and American society with its multicultural structure. English as a lingua franca and World Englishes. The dramatic increase in the worldwide use of English via the Internet.
