Course Content
The historical and cultural adventure of the English language. The evolution of Anglo-Saxon pagan culture into a Christian culture in Britain. The influence of Viking settlers and French nobles on English culture. Latin influence during the Renaissance and Reformation and the development of Protestant culture in England. The colonial period and the British Empire. The American Revolution and the development of American culture. British and American culture in the Enlightenment and Industrial Revolution. Modernism and post-modernism effects on British and American culture. Contemporary British and American societies with their multicultural structure.
Objectives of the Course
The aim of the course is to understand how the English and American cultures have developed throughout their historical journey in terms of sub-categories of culture such as literature, art, social life, and most importantly language, to gain the ability to better recognize and understand the target language and cultures

2 | Anglo-Saxon Period and Old English Migration of Anglo-Saxons from northern Europe to Britain and Anglo-Saxon pagan culture in Britain. Features of Old English and its use in literature. Daily life and religious beliefs of Anglo-Saxons. |
3 | Cultural Exchanges Between the British and the Vikings The settlements of the Vikings on the British island and the struggles of the British with the Vikings in this process. Cultural interactions between the British and Vikings and the effects of these interactions on English. Similarities and differences in social life, religious belief, literature and art between English and Viking cultures. |
4 | Norman Culture in England Normandy conquest of England and cultural changes during this period. French to English words and phrases. Differences between Norman nobility with French culture and ordinary people with Anglo-Saxon culture. Important literary works of the period and architectural and artistic changes during the period. |
5 | Renaissance and Reformation Latin influence on English during the Renaissance. Beginning to use English more in literature and science than Latin and French. Scientific and artistic developments in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Protestant revolution and the founding of the Church of England. First Bible published in English and religious developments in England. |
