Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week Topics
1 Examining Conversation as a type of discourse; taking and giving turns in sequential speech and explaining coincidence events.
2 Sequence types in sequential speech; introduction of adjacent row, side-talk and repair.
3 Examining the structure of dialogue and examining its differences and similarities with monologue. Discussion of the tools that emerge in turning monologue into dialogue-dialogue into monologue.
4 Examining the information structure in a sentence and explaining its relations with sentence structures.
5 Introducing discourse and discourse types and discussing their similarities with information schemes
6 Introducing the subjects of linguistic competence and communicative competence.
7 Introduction of Critical Discourse Analysis and its differences from Discourse Analysis.
8 Introducing the terms presupposition, implicature and inference in relation to the role of context.
9 Continuation and exemplification of context and context descriptions.
10 Introducing the criteria used in Critical Discourse Analysis: discourse type, framing, highlighting, presupposition, discursive differences, agent-patient rank, ambiguous statements, associations, labels, professional language Introducing terms such as (register) modes, metaphor.
11 Explanation of expressions with examples according to the type of discourse.
12 Example and explanation of terms introduced in Week 10 and 11.
13 Critical analysis of sample texts within the framework of the given books.
14 Continuing to make text analyzes on English and Turkish texts.
