Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week Topics
1 The nature of the lesson. Students are informed about the course in general and the questions that students wonder about the course are answered. Information about the exam and absenteeism. Students are given an idea about their previous experience in document translation, if any. It is tried to determine the average level of the students at the point of current mastery of the subject.
2 TRANSLATION OF GENERAL PERSONAL DOCUMENTS Sample translations of personal documents such as identity documents, passports, and birth certificates are examined. Emphasis is placed on how to translate terms and phrases that are frequently encountered in these documents. Translation work is done on students' own personal documents.
3 TRANSLATION OF GENERAL PERSONAL DOCUMENTS II Sample translations of personal documents such as circular of signature, discharge certificate and power of attorney are examined. Emphasis is placed on how to translate terms and phrases that are frequently encountered in these documents. Students are provided to practice on documents similar to the documents examined through group work.
4 TRANSLATION OF EDUCATIONAL DOCUMENTS Sample translations of educational documents such as diplomas, transcripts, and student information forms are examined. Emphasis is placed on how to translate terms and phrases that are frequently encountered in these documents. Translating from Turkish to English is practiced through students' own transcripts and information forms.
5 TRANSLATION OF LEGAL DOCUMENTS Sample translations of legal documents such as case files and criminal records are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on how to translate terms and phrases that are frequently encountered in these documents. Students are provided to practice on documents similar to the documents examined through group work.
6 TRANSLATION OF TRADE DOCUMENTS Sample translations of commercial documents such as trade registry, tax plate and tax office are examined. Emphasis is placed on how to translate terms and phrases that are frequently encountered in these documents. Translation from Turkish into English is carried out by the students through sample commercial documents they have obtained from someone in their environment.
7 TRANSLATION OF COMMERCIAL DOCUMENTS II Sample translations of commercial documents such as the trade registry gazette, the commitment slip and the trade registry office are examined. Emphasis is placed on how to translate terms and phrases that are frequently encountered in these documents. Translation from Turkish into English is carried out by the students through sample commercial documents they have obtained from someone in their environment.
8 TRANSLATION OF CUSTOMS DOCUMENTS Sample translations of customs documents with commercial and travel content are examined. Emphasis is placed on how to translate terms and phrases that are frequently encountered in these documents. Students are provided to practice on documents similar to the documents examined through group work.
9 HEALTH DOCUMENTS Sample translations of health documents such as health reports are examined. Emphasis is placed on how to translate terms and phrases that are frequently encountered in these documents. Translation from Turkish into English is carried out by means of a health certificate obtained by the students or any of their relatives in the past.
10 COMMITMENT AND CONTRACT DOCUMENTS Sample translations of undertakings and contracts are examined. Emphasis is placed on how to translate terms and phrases that are frequently encountered in these documents. Students are provided to practice on documents similar to the documents examined through group work.
11 CATALOGS AND BROCHURES Sample translations of catalogs and brochures for different products and services are examined. Emphasis is placed on how to translate terms and phrases that are frequently encountered in these documents. Students are asked to bring a sample catalog or brochure and translation practice is done through individual or group work through these documents.
12 EUROPEAN UNION LEGAL REGULATIONS European Union legal regulations translation patterns are examined. Emphasis is placed on how to translate terms and phrases that are frequently encountered in these regulations. Students are provided to practice on documents similar to the documents examined through group work.
13 EUROPEAN UNION LEGISLATION European Union legislation translation patterns are examined. Emphasis is placed on how to translate frequently encountered terms and commonly used phrases. Students are provided to practice on documents similar to the documents examined through group work.
14 GLOSSARY OF EUROPEAN UNION TERMS The glossary of terms, which indicates how the terms in the European Union documents should be translated, is examined. Frequently used terms in these documents are emphasized. Students are provided to practice on documents similar to the documents examined through group work.
