Course Content
History of translation science, approaches to translation, translation studies as an interdisciplinary discipline, translation studies practices and education in the West and Türkiye concepts and current issues constitute the outline of the course.
Objectives of the Course
To prepare students to the profession of translation in sentence and paragraph level through translation of daily texts providing an awareness of structural and cultural differences between the source and target language.

1 | Getting to know each other, roles explained, course details, information on assessment types and times, procedures on assignment completion and submission, introduction of books and sources to be used in the course, references, electronic data bases, purpose of translation, arguments for translation, translation as a profession, translation and interpretation studies, and other issues are explained. |
2 | INTRODUCTION TO TRANSLATION STUDIES Emergence of translation as a practice and profession, definitions, translation as a profession and scientific endeavor, skills needed for translation, proficiency in source and target languages including those of idiomatic and symbolic meaning, acculturation, research aptitude and skills development, linguistics, semiotics, cultural studies, literature, lexicology, psychology, communication science, interdisciplinary nature of translation. |
3 | CULTURE Elements of culture, tangible and intangible culture, linguistic and cultural translation, differences, the question of whether cultural elements are to be translated, loss in cultural translation, intercultural translation ability, cultural intelligence, relationship between cultural and semiotic studies, challenges in cultural translation, effect of translation on the target readership, change of culture brought about by translation activity, criticism of cultural translation approach. |
4 | TEXT ANALYSIS Formation and purpose of texts, global objectives in text translation, text types such as story, novel, play, biography, film, documentary, advertisement, maxims of Grice, Austin's classification of utterance-action, Halliday's functional approach to texts, types of sentential meanings, coherence, cohesive devices, logical flow in texts, pathways in forming the translation of texts. |
5 | LITERATURE Genres in literature, poetry and narrative (essays, biography, autobiography, travel writings, speech, diary, cuisine) fiction and non-fiction, transfer of style and aesthetics, translation competence, fidelity, free translation, word play, text types such as informative, expressive, vocative, effect of translation on audience |
6 | TECHNICAL TRANSLATION Scholarly books and journals, users guides of imported products, evaluation of technical translations done, informative nature of technical narrative, flexibility in technical writing, importance of experience and expertise in this type of translation, getting help from technical writers, terminology, sectoral expertise, dictionaries of various professions. |
7 | DOCUMENT TRANSLATION Description of documents and official papers, importance of such papers for official transactions, ID, driving license, marriage certificate, passport, customs papers, pension papers, equivalence in translation, accepted terminology in the target language and country, translation of samples, linguistic vs semiotic features in documents, how signs, logo, stamps are to be translated. |
8 | EUROPEAN UNION TEXTS Accession of Turkey to EU, evaluation of regulations and laws for accession, rules valid for the translation of these documents, EU Regulations Translation Manual, stylistic and design of such documents, definition of translator, rights and responsibilities of translators, proficiencies, ethics and application and terminology. |
9 | MEDIA Audio-visual media, subtitling, dubbing, rules for subtitling and dubbing, multimedia translation, importance of culture and semiotic knowledge, fidelity, synchronization, challenges, speech anomalies and their translation, domestication, foreignization, equivalence between source and target texts, widespread methods in subtitling and dubbing. |
10 | PROFESSIONAL TRANSLATION Major professions such as legal practice, medicine, trade, international relations, politics, terminology and expertise involved, challenges and the assistance students can get as well as specific social and science disciplines. Samples illustrated. |
11 | SEMIOTICS Definition and description of semiotics, its place in the overall communication process, emergence of semiotic science and semiosis, the cultural dependence of semiotic processes, relation of verbal language to semiotics, natural and artificial signs and their interpretations, use of signs and symbols coupled with verbal language in advertisements, commercial signs, challenges. |
12 | QUALITY STANDARDS AND FINAL READING Concept of quality, precautions and regulations to improve quality, certification of practices, ISO 9001:2000 Translation Services Scales, ISO 17100:2015 and MYK 12UMS0274-6 National professional Standards, first draft, second draft, final reading, proof reading, illustration of the practice with samples. |
13 | CONSECUTIVE AND SIMULTANOUS INTERPRETING Two major types of interpreting, importance and domains for such a practice, competencies for these two types of interpreting, technological base and ability to use technology, specific arrangements for the training of interpreters for this purpose, notetaking, strengthening short term memory, listening techniques, identifying themes during the process |
