Course Content
Reading and evaluating academic texts in fields such as education, literature, economy, health, technology, nature, culture, law, history, geography and philosophy by using reading sub-skills such as dealing with unknown words, making subject prediction, detailed scanning, reaching explicit information, making inferences about implicit information, identifying reference expressions, superficial scanning, finding the main idea and auxiliary ideas, determining the author's approach and purpose.
Objectives of the Course
The course aims to enable students to read and understand academic English texts in different fields, based on reading sub-skills and taking into account the standards of international English specialization exams.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week Topics
1 Introduction to the course: Students are informed about the course content and weekly progress, and an attempt is made to obtain information about students' current academic reading skills in the target language.
2 Dealing with unknown words in academic texts: Students are informed about how to deal with unknown words encountered in academic texts in the target language and practice is made on sample academic texts in the field of education.
3 Guessing the topics of paragraphs and other texts: Students are informed about predicting the general subject of an academic text in a short time. In the field of literature, a topic-guessing practice is carried out on a text through the use of textual and visual clues.
4 Scanning: The subject of searching and finding information about a small detail in an academic text in a short time is dwelled upon. Afterwards, a practical study is carried out on quickly searching and finding numbers, dates, terms and similar small information in a text in the field of economics.
5 Finding explicitly stated information: The subject of finding information and thoughts that the authors clearly and clearly stated is examined. Afterwards, explicit and precise information on an academic text in the field of health is sought and analyzed.
6 Making inferences about implicit information: The issue of understanding information implicitly implied by the authors is discussed. Afterwards, the thoughts implicitly expressed by the author in a technology-related text are examined.

8 Locating references: Students are informed about the determination of the reference expressions corresponding to various nouns in the academic texts in the following sentences. Afterwards, a study is carried out to track the references of proper nouns on a text in the field of nature.
9 Skimming: The issue of obtaining general information about the main ideas of the texts through skimming is discussed. Then, a practice session is conducted to determine the main ideas of the passages and paragraphs on a culture-themed text.
10 Identifying main ideas and supporting details: Identifying the main idea and supporting ideas of an academic text is discussed. Then, the main idea and supporting details are determined in a law-themed text.
11 Determining the author's attitude and purpose: Identifying the author's purpose and approach to a subject in an academic text is highlighted, and in a text with a theme of history, the author's attitude and approach to the issue in question are examined.
12 Following discourse markers: Discourse markers that have an important role in following the flow of meaning in an academic text and how to follow them are dwelled upon. Then, a practice session is carried out on following discourse markers in a geography-themed academic text.
13 Drawing conclusions: Concluding ideas from an academic text is discussed, and then , different implications of a philosophy-oriented academic text are examined.
14 Revision A general revision of the reading sub-skills learned during the term is made and students are informed about methods of further improvement in these skills.
