Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week Topics
Introductions and getting to know each other, course objectives; expected student behavior, materials, discipline, attendance, exam types and weeks are discussed.
The vocabulary, sentences, and phrases necessary for purchasing airline tickets are taught. Language materials are presented primarily auditorily, followed by written material.
Questions that may be asked when purchasing airline tickets and the answers to these questions are taught. In this regard, the tone and emphasis of the sentences used when asking or answering questions are important.
A research project is prepared on the topics taught in weeks 2 and 3, and students are paired up to complete it. A video that can serve as an example on this topic can be shown.
The names and nationalities of several countries are taught (well-known countries, especially those of international students, should be considered). Emphasis is placed on the spelling and pronunciation of words in the target language. Students are paired up and asked to choose a country they wish to visit and write down sentences and phrases they would use to buy a ticket at the airport to travel to that country.
Synthesis: Students are asked to prepare and present a dialogue between two people – one selling tickets and one buying them – within a single scenario.
The topics covered before the midterm exam are reviewed again as a refresher. An activity related to this is prepared and presented.
All signs and phrases that might be found at an airport are presented in the target language. An exercise is prepared on this topic. In this lesson, some directional words (e.g., right, left, up, down, etc.) are taught or reviewed if they have not been taught before.
Possible questions to ask and answers to find your way around the airport are identified and taught to the students.
All information, phrases, and sentences on a passport and a ticket are taught in the target language. Practice exercises are given on this topic. Students are asked to bring their passports (or find an example online if they don't have one) the following week.
Students are paired up and asked to relay information from their passports to each other in the target language. The teacher will find a sample ticket image online beforehand and bring it to class. Students will then be paired up and asked to relay their destination and the information on their tickets to each other.
Passport control officers are taught about possible questions and answers they might receive. They are also given practice exercises related to this topic.
Students are paired up and asked to prepare and act out a dialogue that might occur between a passenger and a passport control officer at the border crossing.
Before the exam, a general review of the topics is conducted, and students are given question-and-answer practice exercises related to the topics. Questions are answered based on units that students are unfamiliar with.
