Course Content
This course; Forms of describing political communication. Relationships between politics and communication. The main actors of political communication. Role and functions of political communication. The role of political communication in providing political legitimacy. Relationships between political communication and scientificization of politics. Rhetoric and its types as a form of political communication. Political speech and the role of the media in political speech today. Functions of political campaigns, election campaigns and professionalization process in Turkey. Demonstration of politics. Institutionalization of Political Communication and Struggle for Freedom of the Press Political campaigns/advertisements, Political agenda and factors affecting the political agenda. Approaches that try to explain the factors that are effective in voting behavior of voters and their preference for a particular party or candidate. Public sphere and public opinion in mainstream and critical approaches, public opinion and public opinion studies as a socio-psychological concept, Civil society/civil disobedience, New social movements; includes topics.
Objectives of the Course
This course covers the basic principles of political communication. Important concepts of the political public relations discipline such as political marketing, crisis communication, media relations, ethics, strategic management, campaign planning are examined. The course examines the main theories of political public relations and how they are applied. It also deals with political advertising, propaganda lobbying and campaign design. The aim of the course is to describe the institutionalization and transformation of political communication in liberal democracies by considering political communication with its mainstream and critical dimensions in the historical development process.
