Course Content
The world of open source, free software philosophy, and GNU/Linux history; Linux distributions and installation methodologies; Linux File System Hierarchy Standard (FHS) and directory structures; fundamentals of Command Line Interface (CLI), file and directory management commands; text editors (Vim, Nano); user and group administration; file permissions (chmod, chown) and Access Control Lists (ACL); process management, background operations, and task scheduling (Cron/Crontab); package management systems (RPM, DEB) and repository architecture; introduction to shell scripting (Bash), variables, loops, and conditional statements; basic network configuration, remote access via SSH; foundations of open-source system security, log analysis, and essential firewall (iptables) administration.
Objectives of the Course
The objective of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the core architecture, philosophy, and file system structure of open-source operating systems, particularly Linux/UNIX derivatives. The course aims to equip students with proficiency in utilizing the Command Line Interface (CLI). Additionally, the course focuses on delivering hands-on skills in advanced system administration, file and directory permissions, shell scripting, process management, configuration of essential network services, and open-source system security, preparing students to manage open-source infrastructures effectively in corporate environments.
