Course Content
General situation of the Turkish and Islamic world, as well as the Western world, particularly Byzantium, during the establishment of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum. The first Turkish incursions into Anatolia and the Turkification of Anatolia. The social and economic factors that facilitated the establishment of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum. The foundation and development of the state. The Crusades; the relations of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum with Byzantium, other Turkish states established in Eastern and Central Anatolia, and the states of Zengids, Ayyubids, Khwarezmshahs, and Mamluks. The Mongol invasion of Anatolia and its consequences. The emergence of Anatolian beyliks. Political events, state organization, and intellectual movements. The significance of the Beylik period in the political and cultural history of Anatolia.
Objectives of the Course
The aim of the course is to gain the students to the issues of arrival of Kutalmış's sons to Anatolia, establisments of Turkey Seljuk State, relations with Byzantium during the establisment process, eastern and southeastern Anatolia Policy, the Crusades, providing unity in Anatolia. Also The aim of the course is to have knowledge of the political, social, economic and cultural histories of the Turkish principals as well as their contribution to the Turkification of Anatolia by the Turkish principals prevailing in Anatolia before the Ottomans.
