Course Content
The founding of Rome, the Republican period, Augustus and the Empire, the Crisis of the 3rd Century, the reforms of Diocletian and Constantine; The institutionalization of the Byzantine Empire, the Justinian era, Heraclius and the defense against Islamic conquests, the Iconoclastic period, the Macedonian Dynasty and the Komnenos era, the Latin Invasion of 1204 and the fall of the empire.
Objectives of the Course
To examine the transformation of Rome from a city-state to a world empire, followed by the processes of Christianization and the shift of the empire's center (to Constantinople), the transformations undergone by Eastern Rome (Byzantium) throughout the Middle Ages, and its legacy in world history from a comprehensive perspective.
