Course Content
The course begins with a historical and theoretical introduction that addresses the disciplinary roots of social anthropology. The basic concepts of anthropology, its sub-branches, and the development of social anthropology will be discussed. Then, the prominent theories and theorists in social anthropology, field research methods, and participant observation techniques will be covered in detail. In the following weeks of the course, the concept of culture, the relationship between social anthropology and religion, and various social anthropology studies from around the world will be examined. The history of anthropology in Turkey and exemplary social anthropology studies will be discussed, and the development of the discipline in a local context will be evaluated. Finally, the future of social anthropology will be discussed, with the aim of developing students' critical thinking skills regarding the discipline.
Objectives of the Course
This course aims to provide students with the basic concepts, historical development and research methods of social anthropology. The course will present the analytical framework of the discipline by examining different theoretical approaches to social anthropology, methods used in field research and various cultural examples from around the world. In addition, anthropological studies in Turkey will be examined and the development and applicability of social anthropology in our country will be discussed. It is aimed for students to understand cultural diversity, to evaluate social structures comparatively and to interpret the anthropological perspective in the context of daily life.
