Course Content
Kültür ve kültürel değişim kavramlarına historiyografik bir giriş. Yüksek ve alçak gibi hiyerarşik nitelemeleri dikkate almaksızın, tüm toplumsal pratiklerin genel tanımı olarak kültür kavramı.
Objectives of the Course
A thematical-chronological study of different cultural geographies and ages, beginning from the ascent of man to the present. The course has a special emphasize on the transportation and expansion of ideas and artifacts in a world-historical context.

1 A critical analysis of cultural essentialism. What is culture? What is history? What is hybridity? Is it possible to define an indigenous culture?
2 Prehistoric cultures from the first gatherers to the first agricultural communities.
3 Invention and development of belief systems, organized religions and writing.
4 An introduction to the history of urban life: the first cities in Egypt, Mesopotamia and Greek World.
5 Roman achievement: integration of the Mediterranean world and its consequences
6 Differing paths leading to monotheism: Judaism, Christianity and Islam
7 Medieval Europe: feudalism, urban expansion and scholasticism (7th-14th centuries).
8 Islamic societies: integration and dispersal (7th-18th centuries).
