Course Content
An introduction to the history of architecture, covering the major periods from prehistoric times onwards, including the civilisations of Anatolia, Egypt, Mesopotamia and Iran, Ancient Greece, Rome and Byzantium, as well as the principal stylistic features, relationships, interactions and continuities of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical architecture. The ability to interpret architecture and its developments within the context of space, people and society. Examples of monumental and civil architecture from various periods, painting, sculpture and crafts, and their connections to architecture. Types of construction. Plan types. Urban development
Objectives of the Course
This course, which serves as an introduction to Western-oriented architectural history, aims to discuss the discipline of architectural history from various perspectives; to examine the concepts and terminology of architectural history; and to provide an overview of the major developments and characteristic periods in architectural history within the context of their social, economic and geographical backgrounds, institutions, settlement patterns, building types and construction techniques.
