Course Content
Definition, classification of corrosion. The economic importance of corrosion, cost of corrosion. Electrochemical corrosion, EMF series, reference electrodes. Thermodynamic principles in corrosion. Potential - pH diagrams. Corrosion rate. Corrosion kinetics. Passivation, passivation mechanisms. Corrosion types. High temperature corrosion, oxidation, metal-gas reactions. Atmospheric corrosion, corrosion in water, underground corrosion, microbiological corrosion, concrete corrosion. Corrosion protection, precautions to be taken during design phase, precautions taken in the environment. Cathodic protection, leakage current corrosion, anodic protection. Measures taken in material, metallic, organic and inorganic coatings.
Objectives of the Course
To study the relationship between the environment in which the manufactured parts are based, based on the engineering practices of the basic sciences, to teach the corrosion hazards which these materials can undergo in the light of combining the corrosion damage with different engineering areas and to take measures to prevent corrosion damage.
