Course Content
This course covers the definition, parties and basic concepts of reinsurance; the historical development and functions of reinsurance; the role of reinsurance in capital adequacy, risk management, capacity enhancement and smoothing claims volatility for insurance companies; facultative reinsurance; treaty reinsurance contracts; proportional reinsurance treaties; quota share reinsurance; surplus reinsurance; pricing and commission practices in quota share and surplus treaties; non-proportional reinsurance treaties; excess of loss, aggregate excess of loss and stop-loss reinsurance structures; reinsurance pools; retrocession; global reinsurance practices; financial reinsurance; alternative risk transfer methods; and the preparation of a sample reinsurance programme.
Objectives of the Course
The aim of this course is to enable students to understand the role, functions and importance of reinsurance within the insurance system; to learn facultative and treaty reinsurance contracts, proportional and non-proportional reinsurance structures, and the technical characteristics of quota share, surplus, excess of loss, aggregate excess of loss and stop-loss reinsurance treaties; to evaluate reinsurance pricing, reinsurance commission, net retention, capacity management, retrocession, reinsurance pools, financial reinsurance and alternative risk transfer methods; and to understand the logic of designing a basic reinsurance programme appropriate to the risk profile of an insurance company.
