Course Content

Concepts of migration (internal migration, international migration, forced migration, irregular migration, immigrant, refugee, asylum seeker, etc.), transnational social areas, asylum and asylum processes, legal, political, economic, cultural and psychosocial problems faced by immigrants, theories of migration, immigration policies, social work practices with immigrants and asylum seekers.

Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to provide students with a theoretical understanding of migration, asylum, refugee, temporary protection, to interpret migration theories, the national and global effects of migration, and to prepare them as social workers for this field of practice.

1	Meeting, discussion about the general course of the course, introduction to the phenomenon of migration
2	Migration, types of migration, migration processes in Turkey, dynamics of internal migration, urbanization, urbanization problems and urbanization
3	Immigrant status and concepts, regular and irregular migration movements to Turkey and migrations from Turkey
4	Migration management in Turkey, development of migration policy in Turkey, national and international regulations
5	Migration theories, evaluation of migration theories in the context of Syrians and other immigrants
6	Importance of social work profession in the field of immigrant welfare, necessary skills in social work practices with immigrants, based theories and approaches
7	Midterm
8	Importance of cultural competence in social work practice with immigrants and some techniques (cultureogram, ecomapping, genogram, conceptual framing)
9	Re-socialization of migrants, ghettoization, social exclusion, exclusion from the economic sphere, discrimination, integration problems, violence, inability to benefit from basic services and other social risks (An evaluation on the example of Syrians under temporary protection in the context of opportunities and threats)
10	Irregular immigration and its problems
11	Migration and family, The relationship between migration and poverty, Feminization of migration, social exclusion
12	Migration and child welfare, early marriage, child labour, street child phenomenon, relationship between migration and crime, school social work
13	Models of social cohesion, multiculturalism and coexistence
14	Discussions on the future of the social welfare state and social work profession in the world and in Turkey, general evaluation of the course
