The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is a tool of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) designed to enhance the transparency of studies and courses, thereby contributing to the overall quality of higher education. ECTS is a learner-centred system that facilitates credit accumulation and transfer, based on the principle of transparency in learning, teaching, and assessment processes. Its main objective is to streamline the planning, delivery, and evaluation of study programs, as well as to promote student mobility by acknowledging learning achievements, qualifications, and study periods.

ECTS was instituted in 1989, within the Erasmus programme, as a way of transferring credits that students earned during their studies abroad into credits that counted towards their degree, on their return to studying in their home institution. In the following years, it came to be used not only for transferring credits, on the basis of workload and achieved learning outcomes, but also for accumulating them in institutions’ degree programmes. ECTS helps in the design, description, and delivery of programmes, makes it possible to integrate different types of learning in a lifelong learning perspective, and facilitates the mobility of students by easing the process of recognising qualifications and periods of study. ECTS can be applied to all programmes, whatever the mode of delivery (classroom-based, work-based, distance learning) or the status of students (full-time, part-time), and to all kinds of learning contexts (formal, non-formal and informal).

KTO Karatay University has embraced the use of the Turkish Qualifications Framework (TQF) and the Turkish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education (TQF-HE) as a reference and quality assurance tool in the planning, implementation, sharing, evaluation, and improvement of education and training programs, ensuring both national and international transparency. The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) approach and practices serve as a significant tool employed by KTO Karatay University to enhance the quality of education and better recognize students' achievements.

KTO Karatay University utilizes the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) Information Package/Course Catalog, designed to comply with all elements recommended in the up-to-date ECTS Users' Guide published by the European Commission in 2015, to contribute to the planning, implementation, and continuous improvement of educational processes. This information package is an integrated software, incorporating content that reflects the university's mission and uniqueness along with other information systems. It is made available to Turkish and international students, prospective students, higher education institutions, and stakeholders, allowing their participation and feedback. Through this approach, the university aims to ensure active involvement of its administrative and academic staff in the educational processes.
